Who Should Consider an ADHD Assessment?
Kinirons Therapy offers neurodiversity-affirming assessments for adults and teenagers wondering whether they might have ADHD. To access an assessment at Kinirons Therapy you do not need to be refereed by your GP, we also welcome self-referrals.
Does your attention flow to many things, potentially bringing both creativity and challenge in our single-focus world? Whether a new awareness of what ADHD looks like has made you reflect on lifelong patterns for the first time, or you are seeking formal clarity after years of coping, an ADHD assessment can offer you a space to explore whether an ADHD diagnosis can help you understand yourself better.
ADHD can look different for everyone. Below are some of the challenges people might experience, it is not exhaustive, but illustrates some of the reasons people seek an ADHD Assessment.

Do you notice patterns like...
➡ Feeling restless or fidgety, especially when things get quiet
âž¡ Talking lots, jumping in, or completing others' thoughts
âž¡ Finding it tough to wait or feeling constantly on the move
âž¡ Getting pulled away easily, finding your attention dances across many things
âž¡ Others thinking you're not listening
âž¡ Instructions feeling tricky to follow, though you may find you solve things in your own creative way
âž¡ Needing to switch tasks to stay engaged
âž¡ Organisation feeling overwhelming or missing key dates
âž¡ Big emotions or sensitivity that feels as though it runs deep
âž¡ Acting in the moment without thinking
âž¡ Your passion lighting you up across so many interests
These traits can bring both gifts and challenges, holding you back from daily life or leaving you exhausted from adapting to the world around you. Private assessment offers faster clarity than NHS waiting lists (often 1-2+ years), helping you understand your mind and move forward confidently.
Why Choose Kinirons Therapy for your ADHD Assessment?
My assessments are designed in line with the UK Adult ADHD Network's Adult ADHD Assessment Quality Assurance Standard (AQAS) and NICE guidance. This is a clinician-led quality benchmark ensuring thorough, reliable adult ADHD assessments that other professionals respect, so you know the process is evidence-based and robust.
Gold-standard clinical interview, not tick-box testing
I use a semi-structured DIVA-5 interview with open questions and real-life examples, never just rating scales, to explore all 18 DSM-5 ADHD symptoms across your life and how they affect work, study, relationships and daily tasks.
Your full 2-hour assessment appointment
The main ADHD assessment session is a full 2‑hour appointment, this will give us time to cover your history, symptoms, challenges and initial feedback thoroughly. In line with AQAS recommendations for quality assessments.
Full life story from childhood to now
Before we meet, you'll complete helpful pre-assessment forms. Then together we'll go through your childhood, teenage years and adult life, including school, work, relationships, mental health, and physical wellbeing, covering all the essential areas AQAS highlights.
Observer input whenever possible
With your consent, I'll ask someone who's known you from childhood and/or adulthood (like a parent, partner or close friend) to share their perspective. They will be asked to fill in some questionnaires and where possible to meet with me briefly. This approach helps make diagnoses more reliable.
Careful assessment of the real impact and overlap with other conditions
We don’t just count symptoms; we focus on where ADHD‑type difficulties cause challenges in different areas of your life, for example work/study/relationships/home, while checking if other possible explanations (such as anxiety, trauma, mood, or autistic traits) might better explain these challenges.
Clear, detailed reports
Your report will cover everything AQAS expects: symptoms, challenges, life history, health background, observer perspectives and my clinical thinking, with clear examples of how criteria are or are not met, and whether ADHD is present, or if something else makes more sense.
Post‑assessment Feedback
You will have a 1-hour feedback session which gives us a chance to talk through the findings openly, exploring what ADHD might mean for you (both the challenges and positives), practical adjustments you can make, and support options ahead.
Designed to support, your next steps with professionals
The assessment and report are structured so they can be shared with GPs, psychiatrists and other professionals, but acceptance and shared‑care arrangements always remain at their discretion, in keeping with current UK practice. You’ll be encouraged to check your GP’s position before proceeding if medication is an important goal for you post diagnosis.
Specialist training
As a Counselling Psychologist (DCPsych) with dedicated Maudsley ADHD training and experience working with adults and teenagers with ADHD, I meet all AQAS expectations for delivering these specialist assessments safely and effectively.

FAQs
Do I need a GP referral for your ADHD assessments?
No, you are welcome to self-referral. Book a free 15-20 minute initial consultation directly through the website to discuss whether an ADHD assessment is the right choice for you.
What happens in the free initial chat?
A 15-20 minute video call where we discuss what brings you here, whether assessment feels right, and answer your questions. No obligation to proceed.
Are your assessments recognised by GPs and psychiatrists?
Yes, my assessments follow the UK Adult ADHD Network's Adult ADHD Assessment Quality Assurance Standard (AQAS) and NICE guidance (N87) making them comprehensive and well-respected. However GP/psychiatrist acceptance always varies depending on their own policies, so please check with yours first. What makes these reports robust: -Observer perspectives (questionnaires and narratives from childhood/adult contacts) -DIVA-5 semi-structured interview (not tick-box) with real-life examples -Full developmental history (childhood → now) and school reports where available -Screening for co-occurring conditions (anxiety, mood, autistic traits, etc.) -Clear DSM-5 symptom mapping showing what's pervasive, persistent, impairing Medication pathway: I don't prescribe, but can provide a referral to a psychiatrist I work closely with. You are also free to take your report to any psychiatrist you choose, most will accept AQAS-aligned assessments. Important step: Check your GP's Shared Care policy first. Some practices won't prescribe private-initiated medication, regardless of report quality.
Can you help me access medication after assessment?
Yes and no. I do not prescribe medication but I can provide a referral to a psychiatrist I work closely with who can discuss medication options with you. You are also welcome to take your report to your preferred psychiatrist who will be able to access if medication is the right choice for you.
How long from enquiry to report?
Typically 4-6 weeks enquiry-to-final-report, depending on availability, significantly faster than NHS waiting lists.
What if the assessment doesn't indicate ADHD?
You'll receive a full report explaining the findings, ruling out ADHD, and signposting to other support options if appropriate. If you choose to book an assessment you are booking a thorough assessment but it is important to note you are not guaranteed to receive a diagnosis.
Is this assessment recognised for workplace/university adjustments?
Yes, provided your workplace/university accepts reports from private clinicians. You will be provided with a detailed report which will document functional impact across settings, supporting reasonable adjustments requests.
Do you offer assessments for children under 12?
No, I specialise in adults and teenagers (12+). See Teen ADHD Assessment for details.
Where do assessments take place? In-person or online?
